The Meadow Fresh NZ Barista Championship 2021 has been a long time coming but is now fast approaching! We reached out to our competing Baristas to get to know them a bit more before we see them all on stage on Saturday 20 March.

What was your first introduction to coffee? My first introduction to speciation coffee was an amazing Ethiopian espresso from Coffee Lab!

What’s in your cup? Short black

Why do you want to compete? I love the spirit of the NZ competition scene, everyone is helping each other. I love the people I’ve met along the way and everything that I learn on the journey.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? hopefully with my own Roastery and NZ barista champ 😉

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Precision and communication

What gets you fired up? Seeing customers light up in a conversation about learning new coffee things.

What are you addicted to? besides coffee? Puppy cuddles.

What was your first introduction to coffee? An Iced Americano at a small local cafe, when I was a student 🙂

What’s in your cup? My passion and love for coffee 

Why do you want to compete? I want to give my self a new challenge to learn and grow up, and I want to present that I am happy when I make coffee for other people!

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? Working as a good barista who gives huge inspiration to other people 🙂 

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Professionalism and attention to small details. 

What gets you fired up? Perfect latte art on a flat white!  

What are you addicted to? I know it may sound too lame, but I have to say drinking coffee 🙂

What was your first introduction to coffee? My first coffee experience was an instant coffee Called ‘Maxim’ which my mum used to drink every day. At that time, I was around 12 🙂

What’s in your cup? Definitely any type of black coffee.

Why do you want to compete? I always get my motivations from competitions and also it is a big learning curve to me. As making coffee is my profession I need to get myself better.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? I don’t know really know what’s gonna happen in 5 years’ time but hopefully in NZ.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? quality from each cup of coffee I serve.

What gets you fired up? Travelling with Family.

What was your first introduction to coffee? – When I was 13 I started drinking my parent’s European Dark Roast on filter back in Germany. Not my cup of coffee anymore.

What’s in your cup? A clean, fruity, washed filter coffee

Why do you want to compete? Big Question. Like most people I am competing, because I want to learn and grow. I love the preparation time! I also like to challenge myself.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?  In Colombia trading ethically sourced coffee.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Attention to detail and working clean.

What gets you fired up? Travelling and Eating. Another way of learning and growing!

What are you addicted to? Coffee. (Comes with the job). Chocolate (Can’t finish a meal without dessert!)

Person in coffee who inspires you: In the competition world it is definitely Agnieszka Rojewska. Her WBC 2018 performance had the most influence on me.

What was your first introduction to coffee? Working as a kitchen hand in my mum’s cafe, I got used to drinking any kind of coffee.

What’s in your cup? Probably a long black but it depends where I am.

Why do you want to compete? Each time I compete I learn more about the efforts at origin and the changes within the industry.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? Ideally not locked-down, probably still in Wellington though.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? I’ve learnt to have greater attention to detail which helps my day-to-day at work.

What gets you fired up? In a good way, talking with someone who’s just as passionate about something. Mainly music, spirits or coffee.

What are you addicted to? At the moment, really enjoying rums but not in a bad way. That or baking.

Why do you want to compete? Know more about coffee and myself, the relationship between customers and barista, also try to find the meaning of barista.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? I hope I can own my own coffee shop

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? I have a little bit OCD after I competed I’ve changed a lot, my station cleaner, and my speed much faster.

What was your first introduction to coffee? Working at a local swimming pool cafe and having my first coffee training there at age 16.  From then, I fell in love with the taste, working on the machine, and the number of possibilities that coffee has.

What’s in your cup? Spicy dirty chai

Why do you want to compete? I want to compete as I have a strong love and passion for coffee from when I was first introduced to it. I always love to learn new techniques, to better myself, and push myself within the coffee industry. The competition is a great opportunity to grow and learn from some of the best and to strive to get there myself.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? I hope to be running my own hospitality business, whether it’s a coffee shop, coffee cart or a cafe/restaurant, I really enjoy the industry and the people you meet.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Don’t sweat the small stuff, control what you can control, focus on what you know, and pull it off well!!

What gets you fired up? Seeing progress, makes me push myself 100 times harder to achieve my next goal. Gives me great motivation!

What are you addicted to? As any barista would say (I will assume) I am addicted to caffeine. Coffee is best for sure, but I love a “blue V” energy drink to help make it through long shifts. I’m also addicted to collecting hair tie scrunchies, and dying my hair wild colours!

Person in coffee who inspires you: A person who inspires me in the coffee industry is someone local to my area who lives, loves, and breathes coffee, and shows you anything is possible if you keep practicing and have goals. He’s super knowledgeable and I learn something new every time we chat coffee. Did my first barista training course with him, learned all the fundamentals, and got inspired.

What was your first introduction to coffee? I worked as a dishwasher in an Upper Hutt cafe, when the Barista resigned I took the opportunity to upskill and started doing the shots and learning how to steam milk, when they left I took over as the main barista.

What’s in your cup? A six ounce flatty 

Why do you want to compete? I am passionate about coffee and the industry. I have enjoyed learning more about coffee brewing, production, and the history behind this wonderful little bean that’s taken over the world.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? In five years I want to working to make great coffee more accessible to everyone.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Cleanliness is next to Godliness

What gets you fired up? Finding problems and challenges and fixing them
