What was your first introduction to coffee? Probably my dad’s morning cuppa. He always has a pot ready in the morning.

What’s in your cup? At home, I enjoy espressos or v60 from Wellington roasters. I never stick to one bean or blend because there’s too much to discover. I also never drink the coffee I roast at home because I like to keep in touch with what others are doing.

Why do you want to compete? There’s nothing like a competition to stay interested and challenge yourself. It’s also a great way to see up close what the best are doing.

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time? I hope I’ll still be working at Ripe, the job I have right now is the one I’ve always wanted.

What’s something you take from competitions into your everyday work life? Tonnes of humility. I’ve had big ups and downs so far, in competition and in life, so I try to remember that there is so much I don’t know but there are a lot of people out there with that knowledge and they are often only a phone call away. Competitions foster a spirit of community and I wouldn’t be here without it.

What gets you fired up? When I brew a really good cup several times in a row, I get a serious high. Also when I find new reference material to explore, it gives me a boost of energy.

What are you addicted to? Social media (yeah, I know).

Person in coffee who inspires you: Sooo many. Kim Boyd was one of the first that got me curious about what’s beyond the daily café grind. James Hoffmann’s bad coffee products reviews keep me alive. Scott Rao is controversial, but his books and classes made me a better roaster and barista.
